Areas of Study

Hampshire's interdisciplinary approach means that the basis for each student's academic program is her or his interests, rather than requirements imposed by academic departments and majors. Hampshire is structured to assist students and faculty to make meaningful connections between academic disciplines, which are often fragmented when faculty are isolated in traditional college departments. Hampshire has instead organized its curriculum into five interdisciplinary Schools: Cognitive Science; Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Interdisciplinary Arts; Natural Science; and Social Science.

Although Hampshire supports concentrations in virtually any imaginable area, prospective students often look first for strength within general academic fields. The table below will open pdf files which reflect information regarding general areas of study. Such information includes a list courses recently offered at Hampshire and within the Five College consortium. Additionally, these documents reflect academic resources, examples of student work, and alumni career and graduate school paths.

Please note that the areas of study listed are intended as samples and do not reflect all possible courses and programs. These are not traditional majors; all Hampshire students design their own areas of concentration in close concert with faculty committees.
