Apply for Financial Aid

International Students
An international student is defined as one who is not a citizen or permanent resident alien of the United States. The only assistance available to international students is that which is described on this page.

Hampshire offers either need-based or merit-based financial assistance to international students, but not both.

Hampshire College offers a limited amount of financial aid (grant) assistance to international students who show evidence of superior academic achievement and who demonstrate financial need. These grants can cover up to the cost of tuition. Students who receive grant assistance are responsible for any remaining cost of tuition, as well as the expense of room, board, fees, transportation, supplies, and personal expenses. This grant is renewable for three years, provided the student is enrolled and is making satisfactory academic progress. The amount of grant aid cannot be increased in renewal years. Financial assistance is not available to international students who did not receive aid upon admittance. While the competition for international grants is strong, it is also the case that Hampshire is committed to maintaining and expanding its global campus community.

You and your parents must submit the following forms by our January 1 deadline:

1A. 2010-11 International Student Financial Aid Application. A separate form must be completed by each parent if your parents are not together. Please use U.S. dollars when completing this form.

OR

1B. New this year - an online 2010-11 PROFILE application. With this form, you can select the currency you wish to use to complete the application. If your parents are not together, you will be prompted to have your noncustodial parent complete a Noncustodial PROFILE form.

2.  Certification of Finances form. This is required for all international applications.

International applicants are notified of their admissions and financial aid decisions in mid-March. Accepted students must confirm their intention to enroll by May 1 with payment of a non-refundable deposit.

Need-based Aid
Need-based scholarships meet from one-quarter to full tuition and are awarded to approximately 10 students per year who show superior academic promise and financial need. Room, board, books, transportation, and personal expenses are not covered; therefore each student must meet expenses of at least $12,000 per academic year.

All students receiving need-based aid awards from Hampshire are offered an opportunity to meet part of their portion of expenses through a campus job. Campus job earnings normally range from $2,100 for first-year students to $2,500 in later years.

Merit-based Aid
Merit-based awards of from $5,000 to $10,000 per year are offered to a limited number of top students whose financial need is too low to qualify for need-based aid.

U.S. citizens (even if dual), permanent residents, and naturalized citizens are not considered international students in the application process. They may use any application plan, and the maximum amount of financial assistance available can range up to full demonstrated need.
