Cuba Travel Program

We thank the alumni, parents, and friends who participated in our first-ever Alumni Travel Program to Havana, Cuba in January, 2013. This program was a great success, and we are in the process of applying to renew the license for next year.

The Alumni Travel Program draws on the close contacts made during Hampshire’s unique twelve-year-old Study Abroad Program in Havana, run in conjunction with the Cuban Union of Artists and Writers (UNEAC).

Participants meet with sociologists, musicians, visual artists, architects and planners, filmmakers, and dancers for discussions and performances. All those leading the tours, workshops, and discussions are members of UNEAC and have worked closely with Hampshire faculty and students since the founding of the program.*

Contemporary Cuban Society

Professors Carollee Bengelsdorf and Margaret Cerullo lead a trip exploring daily life in Cuba, with a focus on changing issues of inequality, gender, sexuality, and race. The group meets with Cuban writers, anthropologists, filmmakers, sociologists, and historians to discuss these issues, and spends a day in the ecological community of Las Terrazas in Pinar del Rio.

Contemporary Cuban Visual Arts and Architecture

Professor Jacqueline Hayden and artist and publisher Steven Daiber lead a trip on visual arts and architecture in Cuba today. The group participates in a number of artist-led exhibition tours and art workshops, as well as a tour of the architecture of Old Havana, led by one of its principal renovators. There are many opportunities to attend dance, music, and theatrical performances.
