Assistive Technology for Students with Learning Disabilities

Hampshire has recently upgraded assistive technology resources for students with learning disabilities. The locations and availability of our four work stations are described below. Two work stations are in the assistive technology carrels on the second floor of the library. To gain access to the carrels you need to be on the Public Safety key list. To be placed on the list, please contact Joel Dansky, Disabilities Services Coordinator, by telephone, x5423, or email, jdansky@hampshire.edu. Preference is given to students with documented learning disabilities.

Software available includes text-to-speech (Kurzweil, Readiris), speech-to-text (Naturally Speaking, iListen), and graphic organization (Inspiration). All stations have necessary user manuals and tutorials. Please note that speech-to-text programs require a minimum of one hour to train the machine to your voice. Even then, do not expect better than 95% accuracy. Kurzweil (read only for PCs) is available on the network. Joel Dansky is available for individual training sessions and support. Media Services staff (John Bruner and John Gunther) are available for trouble shooting and general assistance.

Kurzweil 3000 For Windows on the Network

The Kurzweil 3000 software is now available on the network for up to five users at a time. For installation instructions and a link to the software, point a web browser to: software.hampshire.edu/public/windows/all/software/kurzweil/

Installation Instructions
1. Download the Kurzweil 3000 software and save it to your computer: kurz3000.exe (295 MB)
2. Double-click the kurz3000.exe file you saved on your computer. Click OK, then click Unzip. This will extract the contents to C:ÄKurzweil. After the files have been unpacked, click on OK, which will start the install wizard.
3. There are three versions of the Kurzweil 3000 software available:
Kurzweil 3000 Network Learn Station (4)
        Kurzweil 3000 Network Professional (B&W) (0)
Kurzweil 3000 Network Professional (Color) (1)
The number in parenthesis is the number of licenses owned by Hampshire College. Choose the version you want to install and click OK.

NOTE: If we have no licenses then do not choose that particular version -- it will not work. The license number represents the number of copies of the software that can be running at the same time. After installing the software, be sure to close it after using it (don't leave it running idly) or you will be taking up a license someone else could be using!

4. Click Next.
5. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
6. Enter your user name and organization and click Next.
7. Choose the complete install, click Next.
8. Click Install.
9. When prompted for the server IP address, enter 172.20.66.53
10. Click Yes to confirm the IP address of the server.
11. Click Finish.
12. Click Yes to restart your computer.
