This institution began as a reading
group intended primarily for the self-instruction
of the founding members of the Center and a few other
interested Hampshire faculty. It soon evolved into
a larger group that has drawn the participation of
staff, Five-College faculty, book artists, and members
of the community at large.
We gather approximately once every three to four weeks,
generally on a Thursday evening, for conversation
and light refreshments. As a rule, we read and discuss
some brief texts. On other occasions, participants
present work-in-progress. Whenever possible, we attempt
to employ outside guest speakers in a variety of settings.
When a guest lecture is held on a Thursday evening,
for example, the speaker generally offers a seminar
on the following Friday morning.
We strive to create an informal and friendly setting,
and we welcome new participants.
