Popup Ads and Windows

Few things can slow down Internet surfing more than Popup ad pages. Newer browsers now include popup blocking within the application. Or, there are add-on tools that can be installed to block popups as you surf.

Popup blocker enabled browsers include Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. Note that these browsers allow exceptions to popup blocking, and Hampshire’s Intranet site is one domain where popups must be allowed. To customize which sites are allowed to display popup windows:

Find your browser’s preference or options settings window. (Try Tools-->Options or Edit-->Preferences in Windows browsers or Firefox-->Preferences on a Mac.)

Look for Privacy and Security settings. This is usually where you will find instructions for popup blocking.

In the exceptions or allow window, add *.hampshire.edu. Remove any sites that may already be there, if you prefer not to exclude them from popup blocking. (e.g. Netscape allows popups from Netscape and from AOL.)

If you find that you need additional popup blocking, many popular services provide add-on toolbars that includes a popup blocking tool.

Google is one popular option. Go to www.google.com. The Google Toolbar will be found under the “More” link.

Yahoo! also provides popup blocking with its toolbar. You may have to search to find the download.

If you want to try a different option, make sure you research the provider and read the user agreement to verify that the toolbar or popup blocking service is not spyware in disguise.
