Associated Programs

The School of Cognitive Science is associated with the following programs:

Culture, Brain, and Development Program: The Program in Culture, Brain, and Development (CBD) at Hampshire College explores the frontiers of culture, psychology, neuroscience, and biology to foster innovative learning and research into questions about the relationships among culture, environment, biology, and brain/mind that reach across traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Critical Studies of Childhood, Youth, and Learning Program: Promotes critical thinking that entails examining childhood; child development; process of human learning; and educational theory and practice in the context of larger social structures; cultural and historical processes; and political economy.

Design, Art, and Technology:  Innovation Synergy:  Hampshire College announces a new academic program that aims to create new ways of thinking about how design, art, and technology converge. And how, together, they can shape and influence perception and society.

The Hampshire College Lecture Series on Science and Religion: For the last two years Hampshire College has hosted a series of lectures on Science and Religion. We continue our series this year, exploring the ongoing dialogue between these influential ways of looking at the world. We invite you to join us for continued discussion in the 2008-2009 school year and beyond. The theme for 2008-2009 is Origins and the Meaning of Life. Lectures are scheduled on October 23rd, November 20th, February 26th, and April 2nd. The theme for 2007-2008 was A History of Conflict and Cooperation, and the theme for 2006-2007 was Nature, Belief, and the Supernatural.

Five College Certificate in Cognitive Neuroscience: This certificate is designed to offer a unique opportunity for undergraduate students in the Five Colleges to deepen their understanding of cognitive neuroscience through theoretical and empirical training. The Five College Certificate in cognitive neuroscience program includes courses in research techniques, basic scientific foundations, neuroscience, philosophy, and cognition, combined with independent research. It brings together several related disciplines, each of which provides a different focus on mind-brain issues.

Women in Science: Specific activities connected with the Women in Science Program have varied over the years and have included seminars by women scientists; informal gatherings; seeking funding for research support for student-faculty teams; college/school partnerships; and summer science camps on the Hampshire campus. It sponsored and ran two annual Day-In-the-Lab events for middle school students, one for girls and one for boys and girls from nearby urban school systems; Day-in-the-Lab ran for over twenty years.
