Field Study Opportunities: Sample Programs

Here is a sampling of programs that have been popular among Hampshire students. For more insight, from a Hampshire student perspective, we encourage you to read experience reports (available in GEO) submitted by students who participated in these programs and others. SIT Study Abroad

Program Highlights: Independent Study Project (ISP), Homestay, Language Study, Field Study Methods Course, Thematic Excursions
Program Locations: Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Europe, Latin America, Middle East
Focus On: Critical Global Issues
Bottom Line: SIT programs facilitate an intensive interaction between participants and their host countries. Studying with host country faculty and living with families, students gain a deep appreciation for local cultures, develop language skills, and become immersed in diverse topics ranging from the politics of identity to post-conflict transformation and from global health to environmental policy.

Living Routes

Program Highlights:Integration within Intentional Communities, Service Learning, Individualized Learning Plans
Program Locations:Costa Rica, India, Israel, Scotland, Australia, Peru, U.S.A., Mexico, Brazil
Focus On:Sustainability
Bottom Line:
Together, students and faculty create a learning environment within established intentional communities. Living Routes programs challenge participants to examine their academic and personal practices.

IES Abroad

Program Highlights:
University Enrollment, Internship and Volunteer Opportunities, Intensive Language Study
Program Locations:
Asia and the Pacific; Africa; Europe; Latin America; Middle East
Focus On:
Large range of academic interests
Bottom Line:
Through IES students enjoy the atmosphere of integrating into a foreign university.

SFS the School for Field Study

Program Highlights: Field-Based Team Research and Project Implementation
Program Locations:
Panama; Bhutan; Kenya and Tanzania; Australia and New Zealand; Turks and Caicos; Costa Rica
Focus On:
Environmental Issues
Bottom Line:
Field exercises complement classroom lectures and help students to develop skills needed for directed research projects. The academic and research agenda at each center is driven by a five year research plan, established by SFS staff and local community leaders.

Accademia dell’Arte

Program Highlights:
Intensive Italian Language Study, Intensive Training in the Arts
Program Locations:
Tuscany, Italy
Focus On:
Practicing and Performing Arts
Bottom Line:
Students live in a community of practicing artists, musicians, scholars, and students within an environment crafted to inspire.
