Graduate Research Grants and Fellowships

The Fulbright Program
The U.S. State Department sponsors the annual Fulbright Program, providing annual grants for students (graduating seniors, recent grads, and graduate students) to study and research in more than 150 countries. Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were established in 1902 to bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. Thirty-two American Rhodes Scholars are chosen each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. In most years, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution that has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

Marshall Scholarship
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Forty individuals are selected each year to study at a graduate or, in some cases, undergraduate institution each year in the U.K. Fellows are supported for two years. The fellowship award includes: university fees; living expenses; an annual book and thesis grant; grants for daily research and travel; and travel expenses to and from the United States. In some cases, where applicable, the scholarship will also pay towards supporting a dependent spouse.                 

IIE Internship Programs in Budapest and Mexico City
The IIE European and Latin American offices host internship programs for college students or recent graduates who wish to gain cultural and professional experience while interning with an international non-profit organization. Sponsor: IIE European and Latin American Offices.

The Language Flagship Fellowships
The Language Flagship, an NSEP initiative, is designed to help individuals achieve superior-level proficiency in certain critical languages. The Language Flagship Fellowship is an award for up to two years for post-BA students to support their intensive language study at Flagship institutions in the U.S. and overseas. Deadline: mid-January. Sponsor: National Security Education Program (NSEP).

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
Funding from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) supports U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Up to $20,000 for undergraduates and $30,000 for graduate students depending on cost and length of program. Deadlines: late January (graduate students), mid-February (undergraduates) Sponsor: National Security Education Program (NSEP).

Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program
The Whitaker Program supports biomedical engineers (and bioengineers), from graduating seniors through post-doctorates, in conducting high-quality research or study overseas. Deadline: late January. Sponsor: The Whitaker Foundation.

Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI) Fellowship
U.S. graduate students in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, and mathematics are encouraged to apply. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and managed by the Institute of International Education, CESRI is a fellowship opportunity for U.S. graduate students in science and engineering who are seeking a quality hands-on international research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, or Slovakia.

The American Scandinavian Foundation (ASF)
Fellowships (up to $20,000) and grants (normally $4,000) for advanced study or research in one or more Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) for up to one year. Awards are made in all fields.
