Administering the Lottery
All students will receive a letter from the director of housing operations, prior to the first housing lottery, showing their Lottery Points. Students then decide whom they want to live with and determine their total group points for the lottery. If they are lotterying for a mod in which some of the group currently lives, each current mod resident may add an additional squatter’s point to the total, but for that specific mod only. Lottery groups MUST have all the lottery point letters for each student in their group at the lottery, even if the student is not present.
The lottery for mods and dorms will be held in Franklin Patterson Hall each spring. A majority of any group must be present. Students unable to attend must send their lottery letter with someone from their group. Mods will only be lotteried in their entirety (including doubles). We have tried to order the lottery according to “desirability.” If your group has the highest points for the particular size mod that is up for lottery, and you have squatter’s points, your current mod continues to be your mod the next year. Remember, squatter’s points are only given for residents of one mod who are lotterying for the exact same mod. If it’s a four-person mod and two current residents of that mod are part of the four-person group, there will be two squatter’s points given to the group. If your group has the highest points and you do not have squatter’s points, you pick which four-person mod you want. In case of a tie, the group with squatters’ points will be given the mod. When two or more groups have an equal number of points (without squatter’s points), a drawing out of a hat will be held to determine the winner.
At the Moment of Winning
If your group has the most points and wins a mod, you will need to pick the mod immediately, before the lottery can continue. Then, your group must go to the appropriate (Greenwich, Enfield, or Prescott) table and sign up for the exact rooms you want. You will be asked to set the designations for your mod and indicate whether you desire a bed frame and mattress. If all members of your group are not present, or if there are room changes within the mod, you have two business days from the time of the lottery to stop by the Housing Office to sign the Mod Input Form and/or make those changes. After those two days, housing is done and cannot be changed.
Regroup and Try Again
If a group does not “win” a mod, individuals can re-group with others to lottery for another mod in any future draw. There is no form to tie individual students to a particular group. When you form your original group, have “Plan B” in mind. You may continue to re-group for future draws until you either win a mod or there are no more mods available. Since many rounds of the lottery will take place in the same evening, re-grouping may have to happen quickly.
