Web Sites for Linguistics

  • Do You Speak American? Companion web site to the 2005 PBS documentary of the same name. Includes substantive descriptions of variations in American English as well as links to related sites. Note: Hampshire owns a signed copy of Robert MacNeil's book on the topic.
  • Ethnologue Catalog of 345 documented languages around the world, sorted by country. Includes information on language family, number of speakers, and language's sociopolitical situation.
  • History of the English Language Annotated links are arranged chronologically and range from Prehistory to American and Present Day English. Page hasn't been updated since August 2002.
  • International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Contains the latest version of the International Phonetic Alphabet, the standard notation used by linguists to represent the phonetic realization of words. The IPA homepage also links to free downloadable fonts.
  • Interactive IPA Chart Includes the full inventory of IPA symbols and pronunciations in initial, intervocalic (between two vowels), and final position. Free Flash player required.
  • Linguist List Web site of the Linguist mailing list. Links to conferences, dissertations, other Web sites, fonts and software, and information about the profession.
  • Old English Aerobics Anthology of Old English texts and a collection of on-line exercises, all keyed to Peter S. Baker's 2003 Introduction to Old English Includes a "workout room" (online exercises), a glossary, and an annotated anthology of old English texts.
  • Rutgers Optimality Archive Research papers dealing with Optimality Theory. Scholars can download other people's work or upload their own.
  • Upcoming Linguistics Events in Massachusetts Mostly talks, colloquia, etc. happening in Boston and Cambridge, but also lists University of Massachusetts/Amherst events.
  • Scirus Science- and social science-specific search engine. Searches 90 million science-related Web sites. Also searches journal sources like Medline and ScienceDirect. Search Scirus from the box below.

  • Summer Institute of Linguistics This web page has free downloadable IPA fonts, a program (Shoebox) which lets you create linguistic databases (useful for field work), and many other useful free downloads and links.
