  • Academic Search Premier Index to almost 5,000 scholarly journals in all disciplines, many of which are full text.
  • Wiley-Interscience (formerly Blackwell) Journals in Science, Technology, and Medicine. Over 1300 current full-text journals in the sciences, technology, medicine, psychology, and education.
  • Health Reference Center Scholarly and consumer-related articles, many of which are full text.
  • International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS) The International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS) database provides access to bibliographic citations and abstracts from published international scientific literature on dietary supplements. IBIDS is a collaboration between two US government agencies: the Office of Dietary Supplements of the National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Library (NAL).
  • HighWire Press. Medical literature search engine. Contains lots of full-text articles.
  • PsychINFO The largest source of materials (journal articles, books, chapters of books) in psychology and related disciplines.
  • ScienceDirect College Edition A full-text database for journals in the life, medical, social, behavioral, and physical sciences.
  • Neuroscience Gateway A comprehensive source for the latest research, news, and events in neuroscience and genomics research developed collaboratively by the Allen Institute for Brain Science and Nature Publishing Group.
  • JSTOR (Journal Storage) Scholarly articles in over 150 academic journals. Articles date from the 1800s up to a "moving wall" of between one and eight years before the present. That means that there are no current articles. Coverage includes the arts, business, general science, the humanities, and social science.

Web Sites for Medicine

  • About Herbs The integrative medicine staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has developed this authoritative herbal database for oncologists and other health care professionals. Monographs include details on constituents of the herbal product, adverse effects, problems, and potential benefits. The references are annotated and excellent. There is also advice on using herbal products. Because of the provenance, it is a little biased, but the information is clear.
  • Academic Info A directory of scholarly Web resources in health and medicine.
  • AEGIS Comprehensive HIV-related Web site. Includes news, a law library, and links to many agencies and sources of help. From the AIDS Education Global Information System.
  • NatureServe Searchable database on plants, animals, and ecological communities of the US and Canada. Also: directory of the activities of the Natural Heritage Network.
  • BIOTN: Best Information on the Net Resources in medicine. Also see their collection of Hot Paper Topics.
  • CAM on PubMed A central location for information from several complementary medicine fields: diet, mind/body, bioelectromagnetism, herbal medicine, etc. This only occasionally takes you to the literature; mostly it provides citations.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Information from the National Center for Health Statistics and other CDC agencies. See especially their Health Topics A to Z, which covers many diseases and other health-related topics.
  • Centerwatch Summary of research on clinical trials for various diseases. See also ClinicalTrials.gov.
  • CDC Health Topics A to Z A consumer-oriented guide to information on disease and health topics.
  • Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary
  • Genetic Engineering Home Page Many topics are covered, and the site links to the related subjects of cloning and human genetics. Interesting for philosophy and bioethics.
  • Global Health.gov Not the easiest site to use, but good links to global health issues and sites.
  • Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body features over 1000 engravings from the classic 1918 publication, as well as a subject index. See also the book Gray's Anatomy in the library.
  • Healthfinder A government-sponsored site with links to health sites.
  • HealthWeb Links to a wide range of topics, maintained by 12 large research university libraries.
  • HerbMed An interactive, electronic herbal database provides access to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health. It is an evidence-based information resource for professionals, researchers, and general public. HerbMed is a project of the Alternative Medicine Foundation, Inc., provided as a freely available public resource.
  • Gateway Index to journal articles and books in the history of medicine. From the National Library of Medicine.
  • Nutrition Information and Resource Center. Provides access to Web sites, downloadable publications, and other library materials. Most of the information comes from the government, with a few trusty other sources.
  • History of Biomedicine Includes indigenous cultures, traditional Chinese medicine, classic Islamic biomedicine, and western biomedicine from the ancient period to the present. Also includes a history of diseases. From the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.
  • Human Genome Project Information A fantastic compilation of detailed information. There are 6 sections, including research, medicine, ethical, legal, and social issues. All pages have multiple links to everything from full text articles to other authoritative Web sites.
  • Infomine Scholarly resources in biological, agricultural, and medical sciences. Annotated scholarly Web resources.
  • Life Sciences Dictionary
  • Mayo Clinic Health education provided by physicians and scientists of the Mayo Clinic.
  • Medhunt Useful and reliable online medical and health information. Search for Web sites or browse their directory. From Health On the Net, a not-for-profit International Swiss Organization.
  • Merck Contains the full text of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy and other useful materials. See also the book in the library.
  • The National Academies Full-text publications on education, science, technology, and health.

  • On-Line Medical Dictionary
  • RxLis: The Internet Drug Index One of the few Web resources for in-depth drug information.
  • Science in the Headlines Summarizes reports on hot science topics, from AIDS to Urban Development. Link to the full text of reports and to related publications. From the National Academy of Science.
  • Stem Cells in the Spotlight
  • Surgeon General Reports
  • Transgenic Crops: An Introduction and Resource Guide An excellent summary of the work being done on transgenic crops. A useful guide for anyone interested in the production and use of genetically modified organisms.
  • USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia) Provides information on more than 750 medicines.
