Study Abroad Scholarships Awarded

Hampshire student Faye Gotlieb 06F has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and a scholarship from the U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program for study abroad in Vladimir, Russia, during spring semester.

Gotlieb focuses on the intersection of Russian and environmental studies in her Division II work. In Vladimir, she will participate in the advanced Russian studies program of the American Council of Teachers of Russian.

“I decided to participate in RLASP because it is a rare opportunity to have total focus on cultural immersion and language acquisition that I could not have in the U.S.,” she said.

Along with the Gilman Scholarship, she received a Critical Need Language Supplemental Award.

During the spring 2009 application cycle, the Gilman Scholarship Program received 1,465 applications for 600 possible awards.

In fall 2008, Hampshire student Brittney Sampson 06F received a Gilman Scholarship to study sociology and English at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

“Stellenbosch was a fascinating place to study and discuss race, racism, and ‘post-race’ theory, especially as I was there during the ’08 elections,” Sampson said, adding that the Gilman scholarship and the staff in the college’s Global Education Office (GEO) were instrumental in making this opportunity a reality.

International study, either through an exchange program or self-designed field study, is highly encouraged at Hampshire.

“Global opportunities abound for our students, and it is absolutely wonderful when resources can be secured to enable critically important and transformational experiences abroad,” said Brianna Mercker, interim director of education abroad. “We [GEO] are especially pleased to support strong applications to competitive awards such as the Gilman Scholarship, which aims to make study abroad accessible to all.”
