FAQ H1N1 (swine) flu

What is H1N1 (swine) flu?
Swine flu is a form of influenza that started in pigs.  Swine flu viruses have been known for decades.  This one has mutated to allow it to attack humans.  This strain differs from the one that circulated in the United States this past winter.

What are symptoms of H1N1 flu?
Fever, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, fatigue

How can the spread be prevented?
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands.
Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap.
Do not attend school or work if you have a respiratory illness with fever.

How will Hampshire College alert me of any news with regard to this situation?
Please check the college website regularly.
On-campus postings are distributed via the Intranet announcement system.

How will I know if Hampshire classes and/or activities are affected by this flu?
We are proceeding with business as usual. Should any changes occur, we will post that information to the college website and distribute it through our Intranet announcement system.

Should I attend classes at the other four colleges?
All the colleges are currently conducting business as usual. Please contact the professor at the other college if you have questions about whether or not an individual class is being held.

Who do I contact if I am not feeling well on campus?
The Hampshire College Health Center can be reached at 559.5458 and is open for students from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. After hours, students should call the University Health Services at UMass at 577.5000.

On Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, Hampshire College Health Services will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. for any students experiencing respiratory symptoms. Please call 559-5458 during those hours to schedule a time to be seen. During other weekend hours, until 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, if you have urgent health concerns, please call University Health Services at UMass at 577-5000. You may also call ext. 5534 to talk with an on-campus EMT at Hampshire; for on-campus emergency needs, call 5555.
