Div III show: Nathan Tobiason

Nathan Tobiason 05F showcased his Division III furniture at the main gallery April 8-10, 2009. Created mostly in the Lemelson Center, the furniture ranged from a portable, folding baltic birch chair and table set to a geometric metal couch with vinyl upholstery.

Though initially planning to take one product from concept to small-scale manufacturing and distribution, Tobiason realized the Division III might be his "last chance to have total creative freedom."

Inspired by the work of George Nelson, Tom Friedman and Verner Panton, Tobiason says he likes geometric shapes, pattern, and repetition. "I believe I am attracted to these qualities because of a desire for things to be organized but maintain some complexity," he says.

While working on his Division III this year, Tobiason also was a teaching assistant for two classes and took the Division III Concentrators Seminar for Visual Arts.
