Our Best Sellers: Alumni Writers on Times Lists
Three Hampshire College graduates had books on the New York Times Best Seller lists simultaneously during December and January, while a fourth was selected for the Times list of 100 Notable Books of 2009:
Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by Doug Stanton 79F was on the 100 notable books of 2009 list.
For the lists of January 4, 2010:
The National Parks by Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns 71F and Where Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer 72F were numbers 21 and 16, respectively, on the hardcover nonfiction best sellers list. The National Parks is a companion book to the recent PBS series by Burns.
The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power by Jeff Sharlet 90F was number 29 on the list of best selling paperback nonfiction.
Among other notable recent releases by alumni writers: Eco Barons, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes 75F, tells the stories of a number of wealthy individuals who are committed to saving the environment. Alaska writer laureate Nancy Lord's 70F Rock, Water, Wild is a collection of environmental essays. Eula Biss 95F won the Graywolf Prize for nonfiction for No Man's Land, a collection of essays on race.
