Five College 40th Anniversary Professors

Herbert Bernstein, professor of physics at Hampshire College, and Debbora Battaglia, professor of anthropology at Mount Holyoke, have been named as the two newest Five College 40th Anniversary Professors.

A 40th Anniversary Professorship is an opportunity for veteran faculty members within the five campuses to share their expertise with students at other schools. During the three years of the professorship, each faculty member receives a research stipend, teaches at least three courses on other consortium campuses, and gives a public lecture on his or her work.

A Fellow of the American Physical Society, Professor Bernstein is a founder and president of the Institute for Science and Interdisciplinary Studies (ISIS) at Hampshire College. Through ISIS, he studies the philosophy of physics and the relationship between physics and society. Prominent projects among his efforts have included leading international research teams investigating military waste cleanup and quantum teleportation.

With a background conducting research in lands as disparate as Papua New Guinea and northern Quebec, Battaglia now focuses on outer space. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, Battaglia researches extreme environments and how we relate to one another around the idea of UFOs and extraterrestrials. Next semester she’ll travel to Amherst College to teach a seminar entitled Visual Identities that will explore anthropological analysis using a variety of research media.

Five Colleges, Inc., is a nonprofit educational consortium created in 1965 to advance the extensive educational and cultural objectives of its member institutions—Hampshire, Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Five College 40th Anniversary Professors program was launched in 2005 to commemorate the anniversary of the consortium's founding. To date, 10 faculty members have received this appointment.
