Nostoi: Stories of War and Return

Web site for Stories of War and Return

During spring semester 2006 Hampshire is joining with a number of other Pioneer Valley institutions and organizations to offer an extensive series of public lectures and events on the return home of the war veteran. Professor of Humanities Robert Meagher is program director for the series, Nostoi: Stories of War and Return, from Troy to Iraq.

The series reflects both awareness of the turbulent times in which we live and a commitment to the enduring relevance and healing force of ancient literature. Meagher describes the effort as nonpartisan, with the single focus of developing understanding, support, and welcome for those who are returning and will return from war to our communities, schools, and homes in the coming months and years.

A distinguished list of speakers is participating: Journalist and classical scholar Chris Hedges, author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, has been awarded both the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of global terrorism and the Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. Kristin Henderson, author of While They're at War: The True Story of American Families on the Homefront, writes about the military spouse's perspective on deployment and homecoming. She is the wife of a Navy chaplain who served with the Marines in Afghanistan and Iraq. Among other featured speakers are poet, playwright, and Vietnam veteran Doug Anderson, poet and Iraq War veteran Brian Turner, University of Massachusetts military leadership professor Lt. Col. David T. Vacchi, psychiatrist Jonathan Shay, and classical scholar and Hampshire College President Ralph J. Hexter.

In addition to Hampshire, project sponsors include the Veterans Education Project, American Friends Service Committee of Western Massachusetts, other Five College schools, and Greenfield and Holyoke Community Colleges.

Community participation is welcomed. If you would like to get involved with this project, contact Professor Meagher at rmeagher@hampshire.edu.
