Martinsson is senior lecturer in photography at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. He holds a doctorate from the University of Westminter in London.

His particular interest is in how photographic images can be used in human/environment relationships and how our view of nature and landscape change over time.

Martinsson’s photographs are based on archival images dating from the 1860s. Juxtaposition of his contemporary images with the historical images demonstrates clearly the melting and environmental change occurring in the Arctic.

His scholarly work focuses on the history of photography, and how photo archives and collections can be brought to life, as well as contemporary environmental and landscape photography.

The project Martinsson will speak about at Hampshire takes an interdisciplinary approach, using art and science to bear witness to the ecological catastrophe unfolding in the Arctic. His residency at the College will enable him to work with students studying across academic disciplines who share the commitment to sustainability that is one of the hallmarks of a Hampshire education.
