Anna Sussman attended Hampshire College from 1996 to 2000, studying writing and journalism right from the start. “I was attracted to the approach,” she recalls. “And I knew I needed a small environment with lots of personal attention. My studies at Hampshire led me directly to my work now.”
After Hampshire, where the graduates of 2000 chose her as their student commencement speaker, Sussman attended graduate school at the University of California—Berkeley and became drawn to radio journalism.
“I liked putting together a story with sound. I like hearing people’s voices, and eventually it seemed a more authentic way to tell other people’s stories.” Along with her fiancée, Jonathan Jones, Sussman co-created BackPackJournalist, a website designed to provide coverage of world issues independent of major news networks and corporations.
