New program aims to reduce parking demand by offering convenient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly option to owning a car
Hampshire College has launched a new partnership with Zipcar Inc., providing the campus with access to the world’s leading car-sharing service. The cost-effective and convenient transportation option is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all students, faculty, and staff members, ages 18 and older, and to community members over the age of 21.
Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles per day, and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for up to four days. Zipcar even offers a fun and functional iPhone app that will honk the horn to locate a Zipcar and unlock the doors for members.
The annual membership fee for anyone affiliated with Hampshire College is only $35 and Hampshire applicants receive $35 worth of free driving credit that applies towards their first month of driving. Rates on all Hampshire vehicles start as low as $8 per hour and $66 per day (24 hours).
Cars are self-service; they can be easily reserved and accessed 24 hours a day. Hampshire College Zipcars are located in convenient spaces in high-demand areas. Two vehicles – one Toyota Prius and one Honda Civic – are located at the bus circle between Franklin Patterson Hall and the Robert Crown Center.
Zipcar members from Hampshire, Amherst, and Smith Colleges ages 18-20 have access to the combined 11 vehicles on all three campuses, while Zipcar members 21 and older have access to Zipcar’s network of more than 8,000 vehicles across North America and the UK. The addition of the two new Zipcars on Hampshire’s campus extends the availability of car sharing within the local area, giving local community members in South Amherst increased access to the service. Hampshire College students, faculty, and staff as well as local community members can join.
“Green and sustainable programs are top priorities for Hampshire and we’re pleased to bring Zipcar on campus so that both the College and the larger community can benefit from access to environmentally friendly vehicles,” said Josiah S. Litant, assistant dean of students. “Zipcar will help Hampshire reduce our carbon footprint by minimizing both the need for private vehicles and lowering emissions with the SmartWay-rated vehicles.”
“Universities and surrounding communities around the country have benefitted from the environmental benefits and cost-savings perks of Zipcar membership,” said Matthew Malloy, vice president of global university operations at Zipcar. “In addition, Zipcar allows students, faculty and staff to participate in off-campus activities without having to bring a car to campus.”
Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 225 universities. Zipcar is an environmentally friendly alternative to car ownership, and independent research firm Frost & Sullivan reports that, on average in North America, each car Zipcar shared replaces 15 personally-owned cars on the road.
