Hampshire College and Hampshire County United Way 2008
The strong partnership between Hampshire College and Hampshire County United Way is born of the commitment each has to responsible civic engagement. Each year in the fall, Hampshire faculty and staff make generous contributions to the United Way, through payroll deduction or direct donation. These gifts support the more than twenty-five local agencies that depend on the United Way for funding, and thereby help children, families, and individuals in need.
"I give to the United Way because there is a need," says Natalie Owen, Division III coordinator, "it seems so simple to me, and so I just do it." Whatever one's personal reasons for making a gift to the United Way might be, Ms. Owen's plain statement of fact goes directly to the heart of what motivates members of the Hampshire College communty to make their United Way gifts.
In 2005 President Hexter inaugurated a new tradition at the college: early in the spring term he hosts a luncheon to thank the staff and faculty who have contributed to the United Way. The president's luncheon has become a collegial and congenial moment to celebrate one of the many ways in which the college's collective recognition of its motto Non Satis Scire is realized.
As of the New Year, Hampshire College faculty and staff have contributed $18,495 to the United Way of Hampshire County, an eight percent increase over last year's giving. The even better news is that the number of contributors grew from 63 to 86 — a 36 percent gain!
