Campus Planning and Economic Development

The Office of Campus Planning and Economic Development coordinates the planning efforts and use of the college’s land and facilities. To this end, the office produces and maintains the Hampshire College Capital Facilities Plan and the director chairs two planning committees. The director partners with Sightlines, L.L.C., a benchmarking firm, to provide assessments of the college’s facilities, and with senior administration and the director of Facilities and Grounds on major campus construction and renovation projects. It is also responsible for planning the future use of college-owned land, including the development of Veridian Village at Hampshire College, a planned condominium community, and the development of land owned by the college at Atkins Corner, located at the intersection of Bay Road and West Street.

The Hampshire College Capital Facilities Plan 2009 – 2028 provides, for the first time in the college’s history, a detailed account of projected new construction and renovation projects and their respective funding sources for the next twenty years. This document, which is maintained by the director of Campus Planning and Economic Development, is updated regularly to respond to the college’s evolving needs and changes in economic conditions. The Capital Project Work Plan 2009-2010, which details construction and renovation projects for the next academic year, is accessible via the link at left to members of the Hampshire College community (password required).

The director chairs the Campus Planning Committee and the One Card Steering Committee. The Campus Planning Committee plays a key role in advising senior administration on facilities’ capital projects and other initiatives that affect the campus community. The One Card Steering Committee advises senior administration on the campus-wide implementation of the one card identification and keyless door access system as well as future uses of the one card system. A list of committee members and meeting minutes of these two committees are available via the links on this page to members of the Hampshire College community (password required).

This office partners annually with Sightlines, L.L.C., to conduct facilities benchmarking studies. Sightlines is a national firm that assesses deferred maintenance needs and physical plant operations for approximately 300 colleges and universities. The Facilities Benchmark Study compares Hampshire College to a peer group in areas such as annual investment in facilities, asset reinvestment (capital projects), operations, energy, and service. Recommendations of the study are used to inform decisions regarding managing deferred maintenance and daily operations. The campus community may access the reports from the previous three years by clicking on the “Facilities Reports” link on this page (password required).
