Marion Taylor

Marion has been practicing Shotokan karate for 35 years, over half his life. He holds the rank of Godan (fifth degree black belt) and serves as the eastern regional manager of Shotokan Karate of America, Inc. www.ska.org. He also holds senior instructor status in Heki Ryu Kyudo (Japanese archery) (www.Zenko.org) under the tutelage of Kanjuro Shibata XX, the retired bow maker and archer to the Emperor of Japan. Marion teaches both these disciplines to students here at Hampshire College at both beginning and more advanced levels each semester. His interest in Japanese culture has led him to study the Japanese language and Zen Buddhism, as well as Iaido (Japanese sword drawing) www.sanshinkai.org, Aikido, and Shodo (calligraphy). Though he doesn’t teach these arts, they clearly affect his teaching and life style.
