Recreational Athletic Activities
Recreational athletics offers a range of activities on both beginning and more advanced levels, including classes, weekend seminars, and semester long co-curricular courses. Current activities include a wide range of choices.
Aquatics: Hampshire College offers an adult swimming course, kayaking instruction and rolling sessions, life guard certification, open lap swimming, and SCUBA courses. All are held in our glass-enclosed 25 yard pool.
Certification courses: monthly American Red Cross courses in CPR/AED and Standard First Aid are held on advising days. Each semester we offer a class in wilderness first aid. Defensive driving courses are also offered twice per month to prepare students to use the college pool vehicles.
Martial Arts: Hampshire offers beginning and continuing level classes in Aikido, Hatha Yoga, Kyudo (Japanese Archery), Shotokan Karate, Yang style T’ai Chi, and women’s self defense (R.A.D.). Each of these arts is designed to improve the practitioner on mental, physical, and spiritual levels. Any of them may be connected to and practiced with a meditative outlook. Literature about these arts and their cultural foundations can be found in the Johnson Library Center and students are encouraged to make use of them. Several students have found that they could use their martial arts experience to enhance divisional exams.
