Barbara Yngvesson, dean of the school of social science and professor of anthropology, received her B.A. from Barnard and her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She has carried out research on law, courts, and community in Sweden and in the United States. Her current work, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, focuses on issues of identity and belonging in intercountry adoption, and on the hierarchies of nation, race, and class that are constituted in adoption practices. Her areas of teaching include the politics of law, family and kinship, and cultural and political theory. She is the author of Virtuous Citizens, Disruptive Subjects: Order and Complaint in a New England Court (Routledge, 1993) and of Law and Community in Three American Towns (Cornell, 1994, co-authored with Carol Greenhouse and David Engel), recipient of the 1996 Law and Society Association Book Award.
