Let the Body Speak: A Performance Project

What: Let the Body Speak will be a safe and collaborative space in which woman of all ages, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and social and cultural backgrounds are invited to explore some of the many narratives of their unique female body.

When: Workshops will begin in early November and culminate in a final performance on February 12 and 13.

Where: Most workshops will be held at The Center for Feminisms at Hampshire College.

Why:
•    What does it mean to be an empowered woman in our school, family, and society?
•    In what ways do we speak through and about our bodies, and in what ways are they/we already spoken for?

This workshop is formulated to allow women to engage in an open and collaborative exploration of the way in which our relationships with others—friends, family, society and culture—have come to constitute our body-image and lives. In sharing our stories, we will uncover myths that have become obstacles to us, and imagine and embody possibilities for our new selves.

No theatre experience necessary!

Please contact Emily Rimmer for inquiries and application at erSA@hampshire.edu.

Mission Statement

To work towards an actively anti-sexist campus.

Philosophy

To recognize that gender is a social construction and that social constructions are products of society, not fixed in individuals.

That it is only possible to understand one social identity while acknowledging all intersecting social identities.

To foster a critical awareness of the impact of all forms of oppression, including but not limited to ablism, ageism, classism, ethnocentrism, gender oppression, heterosexism, racism, and sexism and how they intersect with gender.

To acknowledge that because sexism privileges masculinity over femininity, sexism impacts women and men differently.

To recognize that male privilege is the problem, not the inclusion of men. Recognizing privilege as the problem and not individuals provides the opportunity for all individuals to work on the issue.

To provide an accountable space and a safe space. An accountable space is one where the individuals who use the space strive to not reproduce oppression. Individuals hold themselves responsible for not perpetuating oppression. This also recognizes that individuals with target identities may have agent identities, and the impact of internalized oppression. A safe space is one that strives to be free of oppression.

Programming

Anti-sexist programs will be prioritized, and the center will provide programs that deal with other forms of oppression. All programs will reflect the mission statement of the center.

The center will work in collaboration with staff and faculty and campus offices such as the QCA, the Cultural Center, Spiritual Life, Community Health, Community Partnerships, and Civil Liberties and Public Policy.

The center will provide programming and support student-initiated programming. This combination will help provide stability in programs, provide balance between needs and wants, and meet changing needs on campus.

Programs will be offered to meet a variety of needs and interests on campus, including different needs and levels of political sophistication and a variety of social, cultural, educational, and community-building interests.
