Community Council

ABOUT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Community Council has been Hampshire's equivalent of a student governance organization since 1970. In the past year, work has been underway to replace Community Council with a new student government association (SGA). That work will culminate in elections for this new SGA late in the fall 2012 semester. In the meantime, the subcommittees of Council continue to do their work, and an interim student government is meeting intermittently to provide oversight and support of the committees.

Community Council’s duties, historically, have included the following:

  • addressing quality of life issues on campus and the well-being of the College community
  • overseeing relations of Hampshire College with the surrounding community
  • collecting, maintaining, and distributing the student activities fee
  • establishing and promoting the community norms
  • advocating for student, staff, and faculty interests

Community Council has three subcommittees that perform tasks specifically delegated to them. The financial committee (FiCom) deals with student group funding and finances; the committee on community development (COCD) renovates, augments, and organizes student spaces on campus, assists with the development of campus technologies affecting student life, and deals with campus health and safety concerns and policy implementation; and the committee on community activities (COCA) supports student-run events and organizes large campus events such as Halloween and Spring Jam.
