The committee on community development (COCD), is a sub-committee of Community Council that works to assess, improve, and expand the student experience in terms of:
• Facilities and physical spaces
• Issues of campus health and safety
• General community development initiatives
FACILITIES AND PHYSICAL SPACES
COCD works toward improving and maintaining the grounds and physical communal spaces at Hampshire College. By means of the student activities fee, the committee on community development funds the renovation, creation, and maintenance of social spaces for the Hampshire community. The Tavern, Bridge Cafe, and Airport Lounge are all past projects of COCD.
ISSUES OF CAMPUS HEALTH AND SAFETY
COCD works with both students and staff to identify and respond to issues of health and safety on campus. This includes a regular meeting between COCD members and representatives of the campus police, Hampshire College emergency medical services (HCEMS), and other relevant bodies.
In partnership with Hampshire College information technology (IT), COCD reviews, audits, and advises on issues of platforms, standards, strategies, and policies regarding all student technological and computing matters. COCD also works with IT to identify student technological needs and to initiate projects to respond to those needs as appropriate.
GENERAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITATIVES
COCD also works to undertake smaller initiatives designed to enhance the student experience. Past examples of this have included an ongoing subscription to the New York Times and other magazines for spaces on campus, and purchasing new recreational equipment for the upper RCC.
