Hampshire College

The purpose of the Hampshire College Community Review Board (CRB) is:

• To provide fair and equitable procedures for Hampshire College students accused of violating the Norms for Community Living and/or the discriminatory harassment policy
• To hear appeals from students who have come into conflict with the Norms for Community Living and disagree with actions taken by house staff.
• To make decisions regarding matters of fact surrounding specific complaints and determine if the respondent did violate community norms.
• To recommend an appropriate sanction to the dean of student services for implementation, if the board determines that a student did violate community norms.

The board consists minimally of three students, two faculty, and two staff, randomly selected to serve a one-year term. The assistant dean of student services acts as the board’s advisor, and is responsible for training members and for the logistics related to board hearings. The CRB elects a chairperson from its membership, and this individual is responsible for facilitating all board hearings as well as the post-hearing discussion and decision process.

Any member of the Hampshire community is entitled to bring a complaint before the board.

• The complainant files a written grievance through the Office of Student Services.
• The complainant meets with the board’s advisor before formally filing the complaint.
• During this meeting the complainant is advised of the process that the board will undertake in reviewing and, if it so decides, hearing the case.
