Minutes of Benefits Advisory Committee (BAC): Thursday, September 13, 2012

Attending: Amy Diehl, Heather St. Germaine, Yaniris Fernandez, Nancy Booth, Jim Miller, and Shelly Ruocco (ex officio) and David Hoffman from SBA.

I. Minutes from Thursday, June 7, 2012, approved.

II. Introduced James Miller to the BAC who is covering for a one year period while Lise Sanders is on a sabbatical.

III. David provided an update for our 2013 benefit programs.
a. Medical – final negotiations came in at 3.2% which is below the trend rate of 7% predicted.
b. New Dental Plan. The BAC unanimously voted to move from Altus to Delta Dental. The Delta rates are lower for participants and will provide additional benefits. A two year contract was negotiated.
Action: David to prepare additional market data that compares plans and cost sharing information for the next meeting.

IV. Benefit Survey – Nancy spoke to some of the wellness comments from staff and faculty on the survey highlighting the desire for new equipment. It was suggested that we invite Bob Garmirian and Tufts to our next meeting to discuss wellness initiatives.

Actions : 1. Draft benefit survey results summary for faculty and staff
2. Nancy to invite Bob Garmirian and Tufts to attend our next BAC meeting to discuss wellness programs, the RCC, and Multisport areas

V. Staff Early Retirement – David stated there are no plans available at the employer level for pre-retirees. The Mass connector was an option to elect medical coverage for those in MA retiring early.

VI. Lincoln Financial – Nancy briefed everyone on the recent coverage issue and resolution surrounding the “guarantee issue” for life insurance. The problem was with the contract language and has since been resolved. The guarantee issue is still $150,000.

VII. 24 versus 26 benefit deductions – Nancy presented a recommendation to move our benefit deductions from 26 times per year for biweekly paid staff to 24 times per year, giving staff a “benefit holiday” twice a year and streamlining invoice reconciliations through the business office.

Action: Nancy/Shelly to present to the SAC
