Bob Smith

Robert Smith has been chosen to lead the three College Public Safety Department, providing public safety services for the Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith College communities.

Smith brings to this position significant experience in law enforcement and community policing.  Over a 26-year career with the Massachusetts State Police Department, he assumed progressively more responsible positions, beginning as a sergeant in 1989 and retiring from the post of lieutenant colonel in January 2010.

Smith possesses extensive leadership experience from being responsible for the oversight of more than 1,700 personnel assigned to his division, expertise in tabletop and other public safety training drills and programs, and experience with management of large-scale special events requiring extensive coordination with other public service personnel.

He was responsible for the establishment of what became longstanding and effective working relationships with the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Minority Officers Association. He worked with both organizations to expand opportunities for officers of color in the State Police ranks and in developing effective working relationships with surrounding communities.

His professional training spans subject matter ranging from leadership and communication to personnel management and human relations, to strategic planning and national preparedness in the face of unforeseen events. He has served on numerous professional committees, including time as liaison to the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (MACLEA) and as a member of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health H1N1 Advisory Committee.
