The publication of Hampshire College librarian Alana Kumbier’s book Ephemeral Material: Queering the Archive will be celebrated on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in the gallery of the Harold F. Johnson Library Center.

The event is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center, the Center for Feminisms and the Queer Community Alliance at Hampshire, and the Hampshire College library.

Ephemeral Material articulates a queer approach to archival practice by describing and theorizing the work of archivists, activists and cultural producers who document queer lives. Kumbier supports this conceptual work with ethnographies of grassroots archiving projects and analyses of media representations of archival spaces and practices. She brings work by scholars in history, media studies, disability studies, and queer studies into conversation with the practical and theoretical concerns of archivists and librarians.

Kumbier is the Critical Social Inquiry and digital pedagogy librarian at Hampshire. She holds degrees from Ohio State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in comparative studies, Kent State University, and Missouri State University. Her publications include the co-edited volume Critical Library Instruction: Theories and Methods; zines; contributions to anthologies including Make Your Own History: Documenting Feminist and Queer Activism in the 21st Century, The W Effect: The Bush Administration’s War on Women, and The Drag King Anthology; and articles in Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture and Punk Planet.
