News from Hampshire College

February 13, 2012

Food service contractors interested in working with Hampshire on our Healthy Food transition are on campus today, touring the College's farm and dining facilities and learning more about our goals. We aim to change the enterprise of producing, preparing, consuming, and managing food on campus. Food will be used as a means to teach students, communicate values, experiment with new models of food systems, and, of course, serve our community.

Hampshire has issued a request for proposals (RFP), including a Sustainable Purchasing Guide crafted to convey our goals and values. Proposals from interested bidders are due on March 22. A campus committee will work with hospitality coordinator Howard Wein 93F, sustainability director Beth Hooker, President Jonathan Lash, and Mark Spiro, vice president for finance and administration, in reviewing bids. We expect a variety of proposals, with current provider Sodexo among those invited to bid. Two or three finalists will make presentations to the community in April, and we plan to select the new contractor by May. This fall, we will work closely with the chosen contractor to implement the goals of the Sustainable Purchasing Guide, which will be phased in over a period of several years.

As part of the Healthy Food transition, our Farm Policy Committee is working with the sustainability director to develop a strategic plan for expanding current farm operations. Learn more about Hampshire's Healthy Food transition »
