Hampshire College alumna and Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Lupita Nyongo

That glow you see on the horizon? It’s the greater Hampshire College community beaming with pride. Last night Lupita Nyong’o 03F won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, accepting it with the gracefulness and graciousness that has captured the world’s collective heart. Her speech brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience and, we admit, to the eyes of many of us: “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” More »

In addition to the recognition for Nyong’o and Best Picture honors for 12 Years a Slave, we are also proud of another Hampshire graduate. Jon Kitzen 86F is a co-producer of The Lady in Number 6, which won Best Short Documentary. More »


And a couple of weeks ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored Professor Chris Perry at the Scientific and Technical Awards. He and colleagues from Rhythm & Hues received a Technical Achievement Award for their work on the Voodoo application framework. Boston Globe story »

DREAM BUILDER CONTESTANT

If you’re enjoying seeing Hampshire stars onscreen, get set for another: Christina Salway 00F is one of a dozen “top designers” who’ll star in NBC’s upcoming American Dream Builders. Salway started her own company, ElevenTwoEleven Design, after graduating from Hampshire having already generated media attention with her Division III interior design project. More »

100 PERCENT LOCAL FOOD CHALLENGE

Hampshire is going to test the limits of regional sustainable agriculture by sourcing nearly 100 percent of food on campus locally, and a $50,000 grant from the Henry P. Kendall Foundation will support the effort. More »
