In the spring of 2013, I agreed to serve as the College's first chief diversity officer--a role that developed and grew over the years from the hard work and commitment of my predecessors and dedicated members of our community. I look forward to working with you on developing partnerships across the College to promote diversity, inclusion, equity, and respect as central to the mission of our institution.
Our diverse individual and community identities, backgrounds, cultural, political, social, and economic perspectives together form Hampshire College, and transforms us into an active and passionately engaged community of active learners that values freedom with respect; a community that embodies social responsibility; and a community that values voice and agency.
Over the next year I will work with every division of the school to craft an institutional statement articulating the core role of diversity in Hampshire's vision of education and community. I hope that through this process we will improve our campus culture and develop an environment that is genuinely inclusive. I invite you to become involved in this very important process.
Diana Fernández, chief diversity officer
