Presidential Search 2019

The Board of Trustees has formed a Presidential Search Committee with the goal of naming a new president this summer. We seek a president who can guide the process for restructuring and reimagining the College, help direct our fundraising campaign, and assure our accreditors, donors, partners, and all our constituents of the College's plans and resources for a long future. In addition, our community was given opportunities to provide input on the qualities they felt were essential for our next president and they have been reflected in the job description below.

A call for the next President of Hampshire College

The search committee seeks an authentic and energetic leader whose intellect and ability to inspire will guide Hampshire College through the next, crucial phase of its young history. This leader will have the experience to manage thoughtfully and expeditiously; to reflect; to project the College’s mission, values, and ideals on and off campus; and to fundraise vigorously and productively for Hampshire. The successful candidate will possess many of the following qualities, skills, and characteristics:

Organizational Expertise

  • A successful record of managing a sizable, complex organization
  • A passion for telling an organizational story
  • A record of raising significant financial resources for an organization with the ability to expand the circle of new donors, foundations, grants, and friends 
  • A history of recruiting and leading a high functioning senior management team  
  • A  track record of improving an organization’s financial sustainability
  • Demonstrated experience energizing an organization to think boldly and strategically, including as a successful intellectual and/or educational innovator

Vision and Focus

  • Experience and passion for thinking about future directions in higher education on the national and international levels; knowledge of contemporary educational trends that impact student academic success
  • Experience with innovative, proven strategies for student recruitment, enrollment, and retention, or relevant, comparable marketing experience and results
  • Experience in and passion for rigorous, student-directed learning and experimentation

Community Engagement

  • Capacity to set the tone for a community based on respect, civility, and positive relationships
  • Affinity and ability to develop positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni
  • Ability to sustain and strengthen a community’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice
  • Capacity to communicate clearly and command a culture of listening among a wide array of community voices and perspectives
  • Ability to work successfully within governing bodies — including the Five Colleges Consortium — and make the best use of the Board’s capacities and talents in service to the institution

Integrity

  • Capacity for analytic thinking, curiosity, reflection, and lifelong learning; and for growing and thriving with students, faculty, staff, and alums in a community of learners
  • Ability to be patient with process and tolerate uncertainty in pursuit of clarity
