Guiding Principles

Updated February 13, 2019 – President Miriam Nelson and Hampshire's Board of Trustees have been exploring ways to bring about a thriving future for Hampshire, in advance of our 50th anniversary in 2020. Since President Nelson’s announcement of a search for a long-term partner on January 15, the Board and senior leadership team have engaged the College’s existing committees and groups to hear and gather input, and have also developed new committees for inviting more voices toward broader inclusion and equity through this difficult but transformational time.  We are working to develop opportunities for further, deeper engagements with alums, and continue to correspond with alums and parents, fielding questions and hearing concerns. We are making progress on our important work through these engagements, which are essential to guiding the College in its decision-making, now and into the future. Our work together is guided by the following core principles:

  • Preserve our reputation and what is best about Hampshire
  • Advance our educational model
  • Keep the interests of students, staff, and faculty at the forefront
  • Commit to our longstanding values of inclusion, equity, and justice
  • Recognize the potential for long-term positive impact
  • Have the fortitude to make difficult decisions
  • Keep the interests of the greater community in our planning, including the Town of Amherst and the rest of the Pioneer Valley

Hampshire College Accreditation 2018

In March, 2018, Hampshire College received notice of its 10-year accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). In continuing Hampshire's accreditation, NEASC acknowledged the College's many strengths, including: a focus on student-center learning; a mission that serves as a powerful unifying imperative; and a Board of Trustees characterized by an uncommon degree of commitment. NEASC also said Hampshire needed to focus on long-term financial sustainability.  View the 2018 reaccreditation details and access the letter.
