The Tern Foundation and an anonymous donor set a matching challenge to fund the solar array for Hampshire’s new living building.

The College is pursuing Living Building Certification (LBC) for the R.W. Kern Center, which requires the creation of a net-zero energy, waste, and water building.

Hampshire's Kern Center aims to place the College at the center of the national discussion around the confluence of design and energy and water conservation.

Western Massachusetts’ landscapes are a treasured resource. A partnership with local and state organizations will conserve vistas and habitats for future generations.

Earth Day at Hampshire College this year was lively, strategical, and filled with a warm April sun and breeze. Just the day prior, Hampshire was highlighted by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in High Education (AASHE) for “advancing sustainability on a local and global front.” We were one of only 11 institutions to be featured. What a way to begin the Earth Day festivities.

The new building will be the second "living building" on campus, joining the R. W. Kern Center in seeking certification through the Living Building Challenge.

Hampshire is one of 11 institutions worldwide to receive the mention, which highlighted the College's ambitious 100% local food challenge initiative.

Andrew C. Revkin writes DOT EARTH, the influential New York Times opinion blog on climate change and environmental policy. On Earth Day, April 22, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Prescott Tavern, Revkin will offer a workshop free and open to anyone who would like to attend.
