Jewish Life on Campus

Book pages

The Hampshire College Jewish Student Union aims to create a flourishing, fulfilling, and diverse Jewish community to serve Jewish students on campus. The JSU provides spiritual and cultural programming to help Jewish individuals consider the possibilities of what it means to be Jewish, explore the varieties of Jewish experience, and deepen their connection to Judaism and their souls.

The JSU hosts weekly Shabbat gatherings at 5:30 p.m. in the Merrill living room, where we come together to enjoy a peaceful, warm and cozy atmosphere in the company of friends, as we begin our celebration of the day of peace. Our weekly gathering involves chanting and meditation followed by traditional blessings and a delicious home cooked vegetarian meal. This year we are inaugurating an Identity and Praxis series in which we invite guest speakers to talk with the students about how they have found meaning and purpose in their lives. We are also planning a series of programs to explore topics such as Judaism and Buddhism, Judaism and the arts, Judaism and land, and Judaism and entrepreneurship.

We joyously celebrate all Jewish holidays and where possible invite students from the other 4 colleges to join us. We strive to be a warm, hospitable and welcoming community. Our door is always open, and everyone is invited to join with us.

Ellen Bernstein is the campus rabbi, and can be reached at Her office is in the Spiritual Life Center in Merrill.
