Who should participate in this program?

The Food, Farm, and Sustainability Institute is targeted towards undergraduate, graduate, and post-B.A. students, and is open to students from any concentration, major, or area of interest. Some understanding of advanced research methods and analytical writing skills is a plus. Anyone who is over the age of 18 and interested in food, sustainable agriculture, farming, environmental studies and/or sustainability studies is welcome to apply.

What is a typical program day like?

This program features an academic and an experiential-based learning component. During a typical program day, students will join farm staff for morning chores at 7 AM (taking turns on both the animal and the vegetable farms), break for lunch, and then join faculty for class from 1-4 p.m. On occasional evenings, students will be joined by a guest speaker for a dinner discussion, often times preparing the dinner themselves with meat, bread, cheese, and produce from local partners. On Fridays, the faculty lead the students on site visits intended to offer a deeper, hands-on look at the topics discussed during the week. In addition, each student is required to complete an independent research project and give a final presentation on their work at the program’s closing.

Prerequisites required?

We encourage anyone with a strong interest/background in the topics covered during the program to apply. The program is designed to incorporate a variety of skill levels, although it is helpful for the student to have at least some experience.

How do I apply?

We encourage you to apply online as soon as possible to ensure enrollment availability. We have a priority deadline of April 3, but admission is on a rolling basis.

What does the priority deadline mean?

The priority deadline is the latest date we can guarantee room in the program. The applications will then be processed on a rolling basis after that date. After April 3, spots are filled on a first come; first served basis.

What is the application timeline?

Typically, once a student submits a complete application, the faculty selection committee will review the application and make an admission decision within two weeks. Once students are notified of the enrollment decision, they are encouraged to make a program deposit to indicate the intention to enroll in the program.

Is there financial aid available for this program?

We encourage you to contact your financial aid or summer internship office at your home institution and ask about your options for applying for aid. We will work with all institutions on securing outside funding for students when available.

What is the refund policy for summer academic programs?

A $300 nonrefundable tuition deposit will be due two weeks after date of acceptance. The tuition balance is due by May 15. There are no tuition refunds available after the first day of the program. If a student should withdraw from a summer academic program at Hampshire College for any reason, the program fee will be refunded according to the schedule below. Withdrawal before the deposit payment deadline date: 100% of the fee paid beyond the non-refundable deposit. Withdrawal after the program start date: no refund. The student's date of withdrawal is determined by the postmark on the written notification of withdrawal from the program.
