Admissions Criteria

James Baldwin Scholars Applicants
The admissions committee takes great care to evaluate each candidate individually, taking into consideration the multifaceted background of every applicant.

Factors Regarding Admission to James Baldwin Program
While the admission evaluation process is thorough and personalized, the factors that ordinarily most influence a candidate’s probability of receiving an offer of admission are:

  • Evidence of a strong desire to learn
  • Quality of writing
  • Empathy and concern for others

Ultimately, the James Baldwin Committee is charged with making a determination as to whether a candidate is likely to benefit from a transitional year in preparation for a rigorous academic program.

Standardized Testing
For most applicants, Hampshire's admissions process does not require standardized test scores. Approximately 87% of applicants submit scores from the SAT.

Test results can sometimes help the admissions committee assess a candidate more fully, and so test scores are accepted as an option in the admissions process. It is not a disadvantage, however, if a student elects not to submit standardized test results.
