IRB Information for Faculty

We recognize that a number of faculty at Hampshire include projects with human research participants as part of the course requirements. This hands-on experience is a critical component of our curriculum. To facilitate students project activities we have instituted a Class Project Waiver Form for faculty to complete. To be eligible for the course project form, student projects must 1) be for class purposes only with no presentation or publication outside of class, 2) exclude minors (unless in standard educational settings) and other vulnerable populations), 3) include no more than minimal risk, and 4) not use deception or videotaping. Details for these requirements are described in the form. Faculty are also required to be responsible for training their students in ethical practices surrounding research.

If the projects undertaken in your class satisfy these requirements, please follow the link to the Class Project Waiver of IRB Application. You are responsible for reviewing and monitoring your students’ work to ensure that it meets eligibility criteria. You may use your own proposal assignment for this review, or you may follow this link to a Student Class Project Application (forthcoming) that is modeled on the standard IRB application (this would be submitted to you for your review only and is not sufficient for the standard IRB application).

Please NOTE: If after completing the project for class, a student decides to pursue the same methodology for research purposes (e.g., formal presentation, publication, or Div III), the student will need to submit a standard IRB application and will not be able to use the material collected for class in the actual project. If a more extended project is anticipated, a standard IRB application should be completed at the initiation of the project.
