Short-Term Field Courses

Hampshire College offers a number of faculty-led short-term field courses that occur outside of the regular fall and spring semesters, usually during the month of January or at the end of the spring semester in May or summer. These courses are designed and led by current Hampshire faculty, and offer students the opportunity for off-campus study and research either elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad.

Courses are generally 2-4 weeks in length, can vary in academic level, and are considered equivalent to a semester-long course for which Hampshire recommends four transfer credits. Courses offered differ each year, and previous field courses may or may not repeat in future years.

All short-term field courses have an application and course program fee administered through the global education office. Application deadlines for most short-term field courses are mid-October for January courses and mid-March for May/Summer courses.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Eligibility
Hampshire students: Short-term field courses are open to all Hampshire students in good academic and disciplinary standing and who qualify for specific course prerequisites. Hampshire students interested in general information regarding January Term should visit the Hampshire College January Term Program webpage.

Non-Hampshire students: While these courses are primarily designed for Hampshire students, non-Hampshire students (including Five College students and community members) who are in good academic and disciplinary standing at their home institutions, are eligible to apply. If you are a non-Hampshire student interested in applying, please read the following policy carefully and contact the global education office (GEO) well in advance of the application deadline:

Non-Hampshire students are reminded that they are subject to each individual institution’s policies and registration procedures.

Cost and Financial Aid
The cost of each short-term field course varies. Please refer to the course-specific web pages for information about costs. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required once a student is accepted to a short-term field course.

Students who receive need-based financial aid from Hampshire College are eligible to apply for financial assistance through the global education office to offset the program fee. Awards vary from year to year and are dependent on the number of applicants and the amount of aid available. Eligibility for financial assistance does not guarantee that aid will be awarded. Please indicate your eligibility and desire to apply on your application form.
