Suspicious? You Bet!

What is SUSPICIOUS? Anything that seems slightly "out of place" for the area or time of day in which it occurs. The most obovious things to watch out for and report are:

• Strangers entering your neighbor's room when it is unoccupied
• Anyone randomly trying doors to see if they are locked
• Individuals entering or leaving an academic office area after hours
• Audible screams, anywhere and anytime
• The sound of breaking glass or other loud, explosive noises; an accident, burglary, or vandalism may have occurred
• Persons around bicycle racks carrying a bolt cutter, pipes, or other tools
• A person running, especially one carrying something of value leaving the scene of a crime

While most of the situations described above could have innocent explanations, your campus police department would rather investigate these istuations sooner, rather than be called when it is too late.

Don't put your safety in jeopardy by trying to question or apprehend a suspicious person. Always contact the campus police department immediately.

Some Common Campus Crimes:

Purse and wallet theft: This one tops the list. Small items are easy for a thief to walk away with, and many times, this crime goes unnoticed.

Laptops, Ipods/MP3 Players: These items are among the thief's favorite items to steal. Fortunately, you can protect your property by taking a few simple precautions. Don't leave your items unattended and engrave your items at the campus police office.

Theft from autos: Criminals often roam parking lots looking for items to steal from vehicles. They utilize the "smash and grab" technique, smashing a window and grabbing the items of value from the car. This process takes no more than a matter of seconds. Whenever possible, take your valuables with you. Laptop computers, GPS, cell phones, and other small electronics are easy and popular targets for thieves. If you must leave valuables in your car, secure them out of sight in a locked compartment or trunk.

Campus Safety Tips

• Avoid walking alone if possible
• Walk with an air of confidence and stay alert
• Walk in well-lighted, populated areas
• Keep your hands free, not overloaded
• Have your keys ready
• If you are being followed, run to an occupied area or campus residence and yell for help
• Know where the emergency blue-light phones are located throughout the campus
• Do not lend your key to anyone
• Never compromise your safety for a roommate or friend who asks you to leave your door unlocked
• Notify your house director if your key is lost or stolen. Notify the One Card office if your One Card is lost or stolen
• Use caution admitting strangers, and be careful of individuals following in through an open door
• Utilize quality lighting around door entrances
• Report suspicious activities to campus police or the town police if you live off campus
• Tell someone where you are going and when you will return
