Global Education Office (GEO)

The Global Education Office (GEO) at Hampshire College has a strong commitment to cultural and community immersion, and strives to provide a coherent vision of education for global citizenship. Through the study of language and culture at home and through firsthand experience in communities worldwide, international education at Hampshire College can serve as a resource for intellectual discovery, personal and professional growth, and multicultural awareness.

GEO strongly encourages students to plan their academic program to include a year or a semester immersion in another culture, to consider learning another language, and to begin preparation in their first year. The Global Education Office offers in-depth advising and maintains an extensive collection of information on off-campus overseas and domestic educational opportunities, including study and independent research programs, volunteer and community-based learning, internships, and scholarship and fellowship programs in its resource library. Faculty can also serve as a resource for students, as they can recommend specific programs and/or academic colleagues abroad. GEO staff work with faculty to enhance existing programs, further integrate international perspectives into the curricula, and develop new opportunities for exchange and study abroad.

Among the many options for global learning, Hampshire encourages students to seriously consider study abroad opportunities through the college's own signature programs in China, Cuba, and Germany; its affiliations with leading universities/institutions in Australia, Central America (Costa Rica & Nicaragua), England, France, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Scotland; and its participation in the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), which hosts opportunities at more than 130 academic institutions in 38 countries around the world. Hampshire also has affiliations with institutions in the U.S.; it is part of the Consortium of Innovative Environments in Learning (CIEL), and also has affiliations with the New York Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (NYIAUS) and Woods Hole's Semester in Environmental Studies program. Additionally, faculty-led field courses provide short-term study abroad opportunities each year.

In addition to supporting students to study internationally, GEO works diligently to provide international opportunities on campus. Hampshire supports faculty in their efforts to do research with international grant opportunities. The college encourages cross-cultural experiences for faculty and tries to facilitate their professional academic relationships abroad, resulting in enhanced curricular offerings and international course content. In turn, the diverse international scholars sponsored by GEO contribute to the stimulating environment on campus and provide a unique perspective in the classroom.
