Professor of Development Studies Betsy Hartmann received a Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair award to spend four months in India during spring semester 2015.
Her main activity, based in New Delhi, will be research on current population policies, practices, and ideologies in India and the efforts of non-state actors – social movements, engaged scholars, NGOs and the media – to challenge and transform them.
Hartmann will focus in particular on the two child norm, contraceptive policy, and population education. She will be based at the Centre for Social Medicine and Community Health at Jawaharlal Nehru University and at the NGO, Sama–Resource Group for Women and Health. She will also lecture at academic institutions and venues in other parts of India on the current landscape of international population politics.
