February 19, 2019: A Most Difficult Day

Dear Hampshire Community,

This has been a difficult day at Hampshire, as nine colleagues from the Admissions and Advancement offices were notified that their employment at the College will end effective April 19, 2019. I share this news with a heavy heart and immense gratitude. We are losing valued colleagues and friends whose thoughtfulness and dedication have had measurable, and immeasurable, impact on our students, families, alums, and the campus community. We will work to provide resources and support to ease their transition.

The Admissions office has been affected because, since the Board’s February 1 decision, the College has stopped the review of applications. The fall 2019 class will be made up of students who accepted Hampshire’s offer to enroll via the Early Decision 1 round this year, or who accepted our offer last year and deferred their entry. For the time being, we are pausing any further recruitment efforts. In addition, until Hampshire’s future becomes clearer, we are evaluating how to most effectively structure our advancement operations during this interim period.

If you have questions about layoffs—critieria for decision-making, timelines, benefits, contacts, and other information—our FAQ page can still be found here. Of course, please reach out to the Human Resources office at any time, 413.559.5605, hr@hampshire.edu.

Sincerely,

Miriam Nelson

President
