Academics
Founded in the mid-1800s by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge, the University of Canterbury (UC) is now ranked in the world’s top 3% of universities (QS 2014/15) with over 100 programs across five colleges (Liberal Arts; Business and Law; Education; Engineering and Science).
Curriculum
At UC, study abroad and exchange students study alongside degree-seeking students across a comprehensive range of subjects, including unique programs such as Antarctic studies, Māori and Indigenous studies, Communication Disorders, Forestry, and courses in New Zealand and Pacific literature, history, and politics. UC actively nurtures innovators and entrepreneurs. Students will test their knowledge through practical application in the University of Canterbury's state-of-the-art labs and classrooms. Over 35% of UC courses include hands-on research or a field-based component, and many science courses include field trips featuring New Zealand’s unique plants and animals, geology, biodiversity, and marine life.
Study abroad students take an average of four (4) courses either across disciplines or within a specific subject area depending on their needs and interests. Some course restrictions and prerequisites apply. Internships
UC’s College of Art offers students the opportunity to intern with a local New Zealand business or organization on a special project. Internship students enroll in the PACE 297 Internship, which is the equivalent of 1 course. Past internships have focused on media and communications, food sustainability, non-profit events and projects, environmental research, health care, film-making, social entrepreneurship, and much more!
Service Learning and Community Engagement
As part of their academic program at UC, students can also choose to take CHCH 101: Strengthening Communities through Social Innovation. This for-credit course combines service efforts with academic content about community engagement as participants support service projects related to social innovation and volunteerism in the context of post-earthquake Christchurch.
Housing and Meals
Students are housed through University of Canterbury accommodations. Study abroad students are housed in self-catered apartments within UC’s Student Village, a 5-10 minute walk to campus, shops, and transportation. Apartments are furnished and offer residents their own bedrooms, with internet and shared kitchen, living room, and bathroom.
Students also have the option to purchase a meal plan at a nearby UC residence hall should they choose to do so.

Eligibility
The Hampshire Exchange program at the University of Canterbury is open to Division II Hampshire College students.
