Sexual Orientation

Social, legal, and political histories have determined cultural understandings of sexuality and sexual orientation. Levels of inclusion, tolerance, and acceptance vary by culture in ways that can both affirm and challenge identity. The questions below are not exhaustive, but can be used as a starting point for thinking about your experiences abroad:

Questions to Consider

  • What are the legal, social, cultural, and political attitudes surrounding sexual orientation? How will that impact my study abroad experience?
  • What are the norms surrounding dating and relationships?
  • What are the histories and experiences of queer communities?
  • What queer spaces are available to me?
  • What resources do I need to have a successful experience?
